Alps Electric Co., Ltd. has announced the development of the SKRK Series of surface-mounted TACT switches with a profile that is the smallest size in the industry-smaller than a grain of rice-with dimensions of 3.9 mm (W) x 2.9 mm (D) x 2.0 mm (H). Sample shipments will be available in late July 2001.

Amid the increasing digitization of household appliances, portable audio devices are becoming smaller and thinner through the utilization of compact memory cards and semiconductor memory. Compact remote controls incorporated in earphone wires feature LCDs, and the density of mounted components is increasing. Demand has grown for more compact switches used in these remote controls.

The SKRK Series of compact, thin TACT switches meet this demand.

Developed as the world's smallest side-push TACT switch, the SKRE Series employs a dome contact, realizing compact and thin dimensions of 3.9 mm (W) x 2.9 mm (D) x 2.0 mm (H). With a profile of 11.3 mm2, approximately 20% less than the SKRE Series, the new product is the world's smallest-smaller than a grain of rice. The new product features a profile approximately 50% smaller and a height approximately 20% thinner than the SKQY Series of top-push TACT switches.

Boasting high durability, the dome contact contributes to compactness and long lifetime. With a lifetime of 200,000 cycles, the dome contact is four times more durable than the SKQY Series, and provides high reliability when used outdoors thanks to an airtight enclosure that is strong against dust.

Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C, making it possible to use in automobiles. While compatible with larger displays and car navigation systems, the new product is also ideal for key switches of remote keyless entry systems for its compact size. The new product is also usable in such applications as mobile information terminals and mobile phones.
